Why Does Miss America Hate Wal-Mart?

Andrew Munger and Miss Americad The Miss America of 1992 seems an unlikely anti-corporate activist. Carolyn Sapp is a pro-life Republican who ranks Ronald Regan as the country’s best president. Sapp is a motivational speaker and domestic abuse survivor who liken Wal-Mart’s treatment of female employees to the domestic abuse she suffered. At times her activism stems more from the world of Dr. Phil and Oprah than the rank and file.

Sapp founded Wal-Mart Versus Women as a vehicle to promote the largest civil rights suit in American history. “Dukes vs. Wal-Mart” is a1.6 million-person class action against Wal-Mart for systemic abuse of female employees. US Federal Court recently certified the suit. Sapp is “Dukes’ vs. Wal-Mart’s” unofficial and self-appointed spokesperson.

Our cameras followed Sapp as she attended the United Food and Commercial Workers convention in Hot Springs, Arkansas. For over a decade the UFCW has been attempting, with virtually no success, to unionize Wal-Mart stores. Sapp was invited as a speaker and honoured guest to the convention. The glamourous and immaculately coiffed beauty queen cuts quite a contrast with the plain speaking, rough and tumble union brothers and sisters. The decaying art deco resort town provides a visually rich backdrop to this event.

Wal-Mart Nation

Andrew Munger Wal-Mart Nation
For two and a half years filmmaker Andrew Munger traveled across North America to try to answer the question: How did the world’s most successful, influential, and important corporation become the most hated.

The answer is Munger’s new, hour-long documentary, Wal-Mart Nation.

Wal-Mart Nation documents Munger’s two-year journey through the world of anti-Wal-Mart activism. The journey took Munger and co-producer Gregory Bennett across North America, and across the Atlantic. From small town Arkansas to east end London, England, people have a real hate on for Wal-Mart. Even Miss America can’t stand Wal-Mart. Munger wanted to find out why.

Wal-Mart Nation will receive its world premiere at the Montreal World film Festival, which runs from August 23 through September 2, 2007. Wal-Mart Nation was produced by Ultramagnetic Productions in association with CBC Newsworld, and with support from the Rogers Documentary Fund, the Toronto and Ontario Arts Councils, and the Ontario and Federal Film Tax Credit programs.  read more
